I'm sorry to hear your experience has been much the same as mine. I think the biggest part of the battle may be in just being able to see that it really is worth the effort to learn the new way of using Ultra Fractal. Which I frankly was not too happy about in the beginning, because it all seemed so unnecessarily complicated to me. There were new parameters all over the place. Merge here, Blocks there, repeating Trap Positions and Trap Transfers everywhere. It was a bit overwhelming and daunting. But the more I read and the more I play with it, the more I can see the extraordinary value in it all.

After I sent my last message I decided I just didn't yet have enough understanding to try to take part in the challenges. So I stopped that and just played and went back to read all the helps again. The biggest help to me was Damien's message "More Orbit Traps Background (with UPRs)". You said you're saving all the information messages, so be sure to read that one. I was reading that message and using the upr he included to follow his step-by-step information when I came to this part:

Change the "Trap Center" in this object to (0.5, 0.5). Notice that this time, only the spiral shape moved. That's because this "Trap Position" object is only used on the "Trap Shape" inside the "Block". In fact, that is the *purpose* of the "TrapShape Block" object: to let you use a "Trap Position" and a "Trap Transfer" object on just one trap shape, not the entire group.""

When I read that and I could see the changes in the upr, I thought 'Hmmm, seems to me I should be able to use that to wrap one trap shape around the other.' So I opened the upr Ron sent for Challenge 1, because it has such a great shape and thought it would work well for what I wanted to try. I'm sending the upr to show you how it worked out, because this really helped me to see the value in using TrapShape Merge, so that each trap shape would have it's own individual Block of parameters that could be manipulated without changing the other trap shape.

For Trap Shape 1 I used Popcorn, and for Trap Shape 2 I used Rectangle. The results can be seen in the first layer titled "Trap Position Defaults". I had already decided I was only going to play with formulas I'm familiar with and have the most confidence about using while trying to learn how the new feature of UF5 work. That has helped a lot.

The next layer titled "Trap Shape 1_Trap Position" is the result I got when I used Explore on the "Trap Center" parameter (found after you open the "Trap Position" parameter located right below the "TrapShape Block" parameter of 'Trap Shape 1') to look for a shape I liked. Now that in itself would be a nice starting layer to work with, but what I wanted to do was see if I could wrap the Rectangle trap shape around the first trap shape.

The last layer titled "Trap Shape 2_Trap Position" does exactly that. If you open the Trap Position parameter right below the TrapShape Block of Trap Shape 2, you'll see that the "Trap Center" parameter is -0.83721/0.02325. If you click on that parameter and use Explore, you can move the Rectangle trap shape anywhere you want to without changing the first trap shape. So in my opinion this is a very valuable tool, because it gives you so much control over the individual elements. How cool is that!

Now I understand the value of having TrapShape Merge and all it's little individual Trap Shape Blocks... you can do stuff with it.  :) I'm also finding that it's a lot of fun to be able to put the bits and pieces of different formulas together that just couldn't be done before. Once I find a combination I really like I can save it in my predefined collection and never have to assemble it again. So I'm starting to have actual real fun with this.

As for the problem I was having before with not being happy with the look of anything I was doing, I've come to the conclusion that I am so used to starting everything from scratch, that I'm not very good at starting with someone else's upr. That might be what's causing you some difficulty too. I hunt for a very particular look when I'm playing with seed values and I've learned over the years what works well with my style and what doesn't.

The Challenge 2 upr that Ron sent is absolutely awesome, it's the kind of image I see and think, "Oh, I wish I had made that.", but alas, I never will because it's not my style. That may say something a bit unflattering about my lack of flexibility when it comes to creating fractals. But on the other hand, if we all did the same thing, only one of us would be necessary.  :)

So what I've been doing is playing with UF5, starting from scratch using my own seed values and location, etc. I've discovered that I can do all the same things with UF5, that I could do with 4... and a whole lot more besides. I should have trusted Frederik more and taken it for granted that the new version had to be better, or he wouldn't have bothered with it at all.  :)

I totally agree that I could play with UF4 forever and never get bored with it, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to feel the same way about UF5 too. With the beautiful work you turn out, I don't care whether you use version 4 or 5... it'll still be beautiful. Thank you so much for the kind words about my work.
